What is Asbestos?

Asbestos has six naturally–occurring silicate minerals combined in its make-up and construction. These silicate minerals and their properties have been used by Manufacturers and Builders from the 19th Century, for sound absorption, average tensile strength, resistance to fire, heat, electrical and chemical damage, as well as from an economic perspective.

Due to these qualities, asbestos has been used extensively in, Industrial, Maritime, Automotive, Scientific and Building products. During the twentieth century, some 30 million tons of asbestos, has been used, at Industrial sites, Homes, Schools, Shipyards and Commercial buildings.

The prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibers, particularly with mining can cause serious illnesses, including malignant Lung cancer, Mesothelioma, and Asbestosis.

Asbestos Regulation in South Africa

The Department of Labour has clear and concise Regulations for the handling and disposal of Asbestos. The act covers all the aspects associated with the Operational Procedures, which include the following: –

Preparation of work area
Asbestos Airbourne and Dust Control
Personal protective clothing and equipment
Clean-up of work area and waste removal
